Geste, Vitesse, Mouvement\u201d (gesture, speed, movement), a retrospective co-produced with the Centre Pompidou. Chronological and thematic, the exhibition retraces the artist\u2019s career from the 1940s, when his search for new forms led him to create Lyrical Abstraction and to champion an international Abstract Expressionism, to the 1990s, drawing extensively on the Mathieu collection of the Mus\u00e9e national d\u2019art moderne and on the collection of the Georges Mathieu Committee.<\/p>\n<p>The venue itself is a tribute: more than fifty years after the <em>Dix-huit moments de la conscience occidentale<\/em> (Eighteen Moments of Western Consciousness) shown at the H\u00f4tel de la Monnaie in 1971, Mathieu returns to the Quai de Conti. <em>Les Nymphes de Diane<\/em>, a monumental composition conceived for the grand staircase, is reinstalled in the very spot for which it was painted. The exhibition also sets the paintings alongside the artist\u2019s creations for the monetary institution, most emblematically the 10-franc coin struck in 1974. Visitors who bring one along are granted reduced admission.<\/p>\n<p>Among the emblematic pieces of the exhibition, the first room opens with three monumental works: <em>Les Cap\u00e9tiens partout !<\/em> (1954), <em>La Bataille de Bouvines<\/em> (1954) and <em>La Victoire de Denain<\/em> (1963), which entered the collections of the Mus\u00e9e national d\u2019art moderne on the occasion of the exhibition. Other large formats follow, including <em>Hommage au Mar\u00e9chal de Turenne<\/em> (1952), the artist\u2019s first large-format painting, and <em>Hommage \u00e0 Monsieur de Vauban<\/em> (1969), hung facing each other, as well as <em>La Lib\u00e9ration d\u2019Orl\u00e9ans par Jeanne d\u2019Arc<\/em> (1982), a rare abstracto-figurative work.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition is curated by Christian Briend, chief heritage curator and head of the modern collections department at the Centre Pompidou, \u00c9ric de Chassey, director general of the Institut national d\u2019histoire de l\u2019art<sup class=\"appel-note\" id=\"appel-1232-1\"><a href=\"#note-1232-1\">1<\/a><\/sup><span class=\"note-laterale\" role=\"note\"><span class=\"note-num\">1<\/span>\u00c9ric de Chassey has since been appointed director of the \u00c9cole nationale sup\u00e9rieure des beaux-arts de Paris, taking office on 1 July 2025.<\/span>, and B\u00e9atrice Coullar\u00e9, head of conservation and collections at the Monnaie de Paris.
